When life feels overwhelming, your body can go into “stress mode.” One of the fastest ways to switch it off is through controlled breathing. These simple exercises take just five minutes (or less) and can help you feel grounded, clear-headed, and calmer.

1. The 4-7-8 Method

How to do it:

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
  • Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds.
  • Repeat 4 times.

Why it works:

It slows your heart rate and signals your brain that it's safe to relax.

2. Box Breathing

How to do it:

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
  • Hold for 4 seconds.
  • Exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
  • Hold again for 4 seconds.
  • Repeat 4-6 times.

Why it works:

Used by athletes and the military, it keeps your breathing steady and calms your nervous system.

3. The 5-Count Breath

How to do it:

  • Inhale through your nose for a slow count of 5.
  • Exhale through your nose for a slow count of 5.
  • Repeat for 5 minutes.

Why it works:

It's simple and effective, and can be done anywhere without drawing attention.

4. Alternate Nostril Breathing

How to do it:

  • Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale through your left.
  • Switch, closing your left nostril, and exhale through your right.
  • Inhale through the right, switch, and exhale through the left.
  • Repeat for a few minutes.

Why it works:

Balances oxygen flow and helps to centre your mind for better focus.

The Bottom Line

Your breath is one of the most powerful tools you carry. When you control it, you can control your reaction to stress—no matter where you are.
